A recording that is too quiet is the most common problem with audio captured on a phone or a laptop microphone, and simply turning it up in the player is not a fix — it does nothing for anyone else you send it to. Raising the level in the file itself is.
Normalising is almost always the better choice over a fixed multiplier. A multiplier is blind: doubling a track that is already near the ceiling does not make it twice as loud, it clips and distorts. Normalisation measures the material first and moves it to a known target, which is also why a normalised file sits at the same perceived loudness as everything else in a playlist.

Frequently asked questions
What does normalising to −16 LUFS mean?
LUFS measures perceived loudness rather than peak level. −16 LUFS is the common target for stereo podcasts and is close to what Spotify, YouTube and Apple Podcasts normalise to, so a file at that level sits comfortably alongside other material without the listener reaching for the volume.
Why is my file not much louder after normalising?
Because it was already close to the target. Normalisation moves the file to a fixed loudness rather than adding a fixed amount, so material that is already at broadcast level barely changes.
Will turning the volume up add distortion?
A fixed multiplier can: anything pushed past full scale is clipped, which sounds harsh. Normalisation avoids this by keeping true peaks under −1.5 dBTP. If a multiplier gives a distorted result, use Normalise instead.
Can this rescue a very quiet recording?
Usually yes, but raising the level raises the background hiss with it. Nothing can add detail that the microphone never captured — a recording made too far from the source stays noisy however loud it is made.
Does it change the length or the pitch?
No. Only the amplitude is changed. Timing, pitch and duration are untouched.
