Short answer

A video can be trimmed in a browser by entering a start and end timestamp. Two methods exist: an exact cut re-encodes the video so it begins precisely at the chosen moment, while a fast cut copies the streams untouched and snaps to the nearest keyframe, which is instant and lossless but may be off by a second or two.

Trimming is the single most common video edit, and it is also where most online tools quietly re-encode your footage without saying so. The distinction matters: a fast cut is lossless and takes a moment, while an exact cut re-encodes every frame and costs both time and a small amount of quality.

Use the fast cut when you are removing a rough chunk from the start or end of a recording. Use the exact cut when the boundary matters — cutting on a word, a beat, or a specific frame.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add the video

Drop in the file you want to shorten.

  2. 2

    Enter start and end times

Use hh:mm:ss format, for example 00:01:30 to 00:02:15.

  3. 3

    Choose exact or fast

Exact re-encodes for a frame-accurate boundary. Fast copies the streams and is near-instant.

  4. 4

    Download the clip

    Save the trimmed MP4.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between exact and fast cutting?

Fast cutting copies the existing video data and can only start at a keyframe, which typically occurs every one to ten seconds, so the cut may land slightly early. Exact cutting re-encodes the video and begins at the precise timestamp you entered.

Why does my fast cut start at the wrong moment?

Because stream copying cannot begin mid-keyframe-interval. Switch to exact cutting if the boundary needs to be precise.

Can I remove a section from the middle and join the two ends?

Not in one pass. Trim the two sections you want to keep separately, then join them with a video editor.

Is the audio trimmed too?

Yes. Video and audio are cut together and stay in sync in both modes.
