Short answer

An image can be blurred in a browser by averaging each pixel with its neighbours. Three passes of a box blur are used, which converges on a Gaussian closely enough that the difference is invisible, and the sliding-window implementation means a wide blur costs no more than a narrow one. The whole image is processed, and nothing is uploaded.

This blurs the entire picture rather than a region you select. That matters, because the most common reason people reach for blur is hiding one face or one address in an otherwise normal photo, and that needs a selection this tool does not have — and is better served by cropping the sensitive part away entirely.

What it is good for is the whole-frame version: a background for a card or a slide, a placeholder that suggests an image without showing it, a frosted backdrop behind text, or obscuring a screenshot completely before sharing it.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add the image

Drop in any common image file.

  2. 2

    Pick a radius

A few pixels softens; forty makes the picture unreadable.

  3. 3

    Download it

The dimensions are unchanged — only the detail is gone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I blur just one part of the image?

Not with this tool. To hide one area, crop it out instead — removing the pixels is more reliable than softening them.

Can a blur be undone?

Not meaningfully at these radii. Averaging discards the differences between neighbouring pixels, and with a large radius there is nothing left to work back from. For anything sensitive, crop rather than blur.

Why does the file get smaller?

Blurring removes high-frequency detail, which is the expensive part of any image to store. A heavily blurred photo can compress to a small fraction of its original size at the same dimensions.
