Short answer

A solid background can be made transparent in a browser without uploading the image. The background colour is read from the edges of the picture, every pixel close enough to it is erased, and the result is saved as a PNG, which is the common image format that carries an alpha channel. This is colour keying: it removes a flat backdrop such as a studio white, a product-shot grey or a green screen, and it works best when the subject is not the same colour as the wall behind it.

Marketplace listings, slide decks and printed labels all want a product with nothing behind it. If the photograph was taken against a plain wall, a sweep or a chroma screen, that is a colour problem rather than an artificial-intelligence problem — the background is one colour, and every pixel of that colour can go.

The catch is honest to state: this reads colour, not meaning. Hair against a busy café, a grey laptop on a grey desk, a white mug on a white table — none of those separate, because nothing in the picture tells them apart. A flat backdrop separates cleanly; a photograph of a room does not.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work on any photo?

No, and it is worth knowing before you try. It removes a background that is one reasonably even colour — a studio backdrop, a white sweep, a green or blue screen, the flat fill behind a logo. It cannot separate a subject from a street, a room or a landscape, because that needs a model that understands what a subject is, and running one in the browser would mean a download of tens of megabytes.

Why is the file a PNG?

Because JPEG has no alpha channel. A JPEG cannot store transparency at all, so a cut-out saved as JPEG is composited back onto a solid colour, usually white or black. PNG keeps the transparency, and every program that opens images accepts it.

Parts of the background are still there. What do I change?

Raise the tolerance one step. That widens the range of colours counted as background, which is what an unevenly lit wall — brighter near the lamp, darker in the corners — needs.

It removed part of my subject. What do I change?

Lower the tolerance. Whenever the subject shares a colour family with the backdrop, a wide tolerance takes both. If the subject is pale and the background is white, keep the tolerance low and accept a little cleanup elsewhere.

What is the difference between the two erase modes?

"Background only" starts at the edges of the picture and works inward, stopping at the subject, so white teeth in a white-background portrait or the hole in a doughnut stay filled. "Every matching pixel" erases that colour anywhere it appears, which is what you want for a logo whose enclosed areas should also become transparent.

Are the edges clean?

Partly transparent edge pixels get their background tint removed, which prevents the white halo or green fringe that a hard cut leaves behind. Fine detail like flyaway hair is still the hard case for any colour-based cut-out, and a chroma screen gives a much better edge than a white wall does.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is decoded, keyed and re-encoded by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so there is no queue, no file-size limit imposed by the service and no copy of your picture anywhere but your device.
