Most images saved from the web now arrive as WebP, and the software that cannot open them is the same software that has always accepted PNG. PNG is the safe destination for anything with transparency, and for screenshots, logos and flat-colour graphics where JPEG artefacts would be visible.
Expect the PNG to be larger, often several times so, because it stores every pixel exactly rather than approximating them. For photographs without transparency, converting to JPG instead gives a far smaller file.

Is the transparent background kept?
Yes. PNG supports a full alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the WebP survive the conversion exactly.
Does converting lose quality?
Nothing further is lost. PNG stores the decoded WebP pixels exactly. Any loss already present from the original WebP compression stays as it is.
Why is the PNG so much larger?
PNG is lossless, and WebP was designed to be roughly a quarter of the size at the same visual quality. A large increase is normal.
Should I convert to PNG or JPG?
