Short answer

EXIF metadata can be removed from a photo in a browser without uploading it. The image is decoded to pixels and encoded again, and because the metadata is not part of the picture it simply does not survive that round trip — the result carries no GPS coordinates, camera model, serial number or timestamp. The orientation flag is the one tag whose effect is kept: it is applied during decoding, so the photo stays the right way up.

A photo from a phone carries far more than the picture. The exact coordinates where it was taken, the time to the second, the camera and often its serial number, and sometimes a thumbnail of an earlier version of the image. Social networks mostly strip this; a file sent by email, posted to a forum or uploaded to your own website generally does not.

Doing this in the browser matters more here than for most tools. Uploading a photo to a website in order to have its location removed means handing that location to the website first, which rather defeats the exercise. Nothing here is transmitted.

How to use it

  1. 1

    Add the photo

Drop in the image you are about to share.

  2. 2

    Start the clean-up

There is nothing to configure — the metadata goes, the picture stays.

  3. 3

    Download the clean copy

Your original is untouched on your device.

Frequently asked questions

Does this change how the photo looks?

Barely. It is re-encoded at a high quality setting, so there is a second generation of JPEG compression, but the dimensions are unchanged and the difference is not visible at normal viewing size.

Will the photo come out rotated?

No. The orientation flag is read and applied while decoding, so the rotation becomes part of the pixels before the tag is dropped. A photo taken sideways stays the right way up.

What exactly is removed?

Everything that is not pixels: GPS coordinates, date and time, camera make, model and serial number, lens and exposure settings, software, copyright fields and any embedded thumbnail.

Do the other tools here keep metadata?

No — every tool on this site that re-encodes an image drops it for the same reason. This one exists for when that is the only thing you want done.
