WebP files can be converted to JPG in a browser without uploading them. WebP is the format most websites now serve, which is why images saved from the web arrive as .webp and are then rejected by older software, upload forms and some printing services. Converting to JPEG makes the image openable everywhere, at the cost of transparency and one further generation of lossy compression.

WebP is an excellent web format and an inconvenient local one. Save an image from almost any modern site and you get a .webp file that Windows Photo Viewer, older versions of Office, plenty of upload forms and most print shops will refuse.
JPEG is the opposite: less efficient, but accepted by essentially everything ever written. If the image has transparent areas, convert to PNG instead — JPEG will fill them with a solid colour.

Frequently asked questions
Why can I not open a WebP file?
Older image viewers, some office software and many upload forms predate WebP and have no decoder for it. Converting to JPG or PNG removes the problem.
Does converting lose quality?
A little. The WebP is already lossy, and JPEG re-compresses the decoded result, so this is a second generation. At the Balanced or High setting the difference is not visible.
What happens to transparency?
JPEG cannot store it, so transparent areas are filled with white or black. Use the WebP to PNG tool instead if the transparency needs to survive.
Will the JPG be larger than the WebP?
Usually somewhat larger, because WebP compresses more efficiently at the same visual quality. The gain is compatibility, not size.
